You know Samsung for its hardware, but the company sells software, too. For enterprises, Sammy has added new cloud-based (online) mobile device management (MDM) and security software. The free Samsung Knox Express and paid Knox Premium are software-as-a-service packages that enable you to manage your employees’ Samsung Android devices, other Android devices, and iOS devices like iPhones and iPads.
Samsung Knox Premium includes Samsung’s “Enterprise Mobility Management” (EMM) MDM features, and you can choose to further supplement the platform with Active Directory integration, Mobile Application Management, and other add-ons.
Knox Premium also includes Knox Workspace, a secured container that promises to keep your business data safe using multi-layered platform security featuring Secure Boot, Trusted Boot, TrustZone-based on-device, real-time encryption, SE for Android, and common access card support.
The basic Premium platform costs $1 per license (per device), and comes with online technical and phone ticket support. However if you want the highest grade of Knox Workspace security, the cost is $3.60 per license and includes these extras:
– Container application management such as blacklisting and whitelisting
– Advanced container security setting, including browser and firewall enablement
– Additional device restriction and management of container (e.g. camera usage)
– Container VPN setting management such as FIPS mode, VPN profiles and per-app VPN
– Google Play enablement in a container that allows more 3rd-party apps to be installed
– High-touch support (training, tools, and access to dedicated support channels) versus Knox Premium’s online/phone ticket support
Knox Workspace is also available for 3rd-party MDMs.
Samsung Knox Express
The free Knox Express also includes Knox Workspace and Knox EMM, but it has very basic benefits compared to Knox Premium and a simpler cloud-based portal. The idea here is that even people with limited IT skills can use it to manage company devices. Samsung Knox Express is also integrated with Knox Marketplace, an online store for software-as-a-service (SaaS) and mobile applications from Sammy and other vendors.
