Over the last two decades, mobile internet access in first world countries has evolved from a luxury to a necessity. Yet according to Statista, in 2016 more than half of the world’s population still lacked access to the internet and the benefits of the digital economy. To solve this problem, Syntonic launched Freeway, its mobile data saver and content services platform that enables sponsored data and other affordable, consumer-friendly internet access models. Syntonic’s Freeway money saving app is available in five regions around the world.

Exciting new trend: sponsored data saver services

The sponsored data model enables stakeholders of all kinds — from brands to mobile app developers and operators — to “sponsor” or pay for data usage on behalf of a user. In emerging economies, this new model provides mutual benefits — removing the access barrier for users where mobile data fees are astronomical in relation to wages, and providing the sponsor an opportunity to reach, acquire, engage, and monetize consumers who are otherwise unreachable.

By sponsoring these offers, content providers can quickly and easily tap into the hundreds of thousands of Freeway app users in geographies such as Southeast Asia and India. Syntonic’s offerings open access through sponsored data to an otherwise unreachable audience of users who are forced to be frugal with their data usage to conserve access for the apps they already know and love. As an effective data saver tool, Freeway lets users discover new apps and explore content with freedom and flexibility.

Freeway’s new money saving app feature

In developed economies where mobile data usage is skyrocketing, data plans tend to be confusing, expensive, and leave consumers locked into one-size-fits all contracts. In the U.S. alone, wireless users are expected to consume more than 6 gigabytes of data per month by 2018, up from an average of 4 gigabytes last year. As usage continues on this trajectory, more consumers are faced with limitations on their data plans and crave personalized options to balance their usage with a reasonable cost.

To bridge the gap, Syntonic launched Freeway Overpass – a new, money saving app feature that gives consumers who are bound by limited or expensive data plans an opportunity to unlock unlimited access to a wide-range of apps, and the option to personalize their experience around the mobile content and apps they actually want and use.

By providing an avenue for users to directly pay for one day, one week, or one month of unlimited access to specific apps and groups of apps — consumers can use Overpass to avoid massive overage charges or paying more for a higher tier plan. This unique data saver offering not only helps consumers better manage their data plan, but enables them to structure their mobile data access around the content they use and care about most through on-demand, in-app purchases of unlimited data experiences.

Overpass offers are currently available to U.S. consumers, who can tap into the benefits by downloading the Freeway app for iOS or Android. Freeway Overpass will be launching in additional markets in early 2018.
