Vietnamese gadget blog Tinhte.vn — now well-known for leaking BlackBerry 10 smartphone photos — has posted the highest resolution images yet of what it claims to be RIM’s BlackBerry 10-L touchscreen phone, which the beleaguered company plans to officially unveil at an event on January 30th.
Tinhte.vn also posted a video (below) that compares the BlackBerry 10-L to the iPhone 5.
The photos show the L-series (a name created by bloggers and not the official moniker) to have an NFC antenna, metallic volume rocker with a play-pause toggle, and micro-USB and micro-HDMI ports on the left. Unlike the iPhone, the 10-L has a self-replaceable 1,800mAh battery. The removable back cover also provides access to the phone’s micro-SIM and microSD slots.
The back of the phone in these new photos and video clip matches that shown in RIM’s own unintended leak, when a press photo turned up in BlackBerry Dev Alpha code released this week. The photos also jive with previous leaks.
While BlackBerry 10 is based on RIM’s new QNX operating system used in the current BlackBerry Playbook tablet, RIM has emphasized that BlackBerry 10 is a completely new OS built from the ground up. The company recently released a full SDK for app developers.
RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said last month that the new BlackBerry 10 series is being reviewed for use by over 50 mobile operators. Heins has revealed in interviews that RIM will also be introducing a new BlackBerry smartphone with the signature BlackBerry QWERTY keypad, now dubbed the P-series. Although RIM is expected to debut the L-series touchscreen phone at its BlackBerry 10 launch event, the company has not revealed if it will unveil the P-series at the same time or save it for later, possibly at Mobile World Congress in late February.
