AT&T now has 60 markets with “4G” LTE service, with the addition of Anchorage, Bakersfield, Modesto, Omaha, Jacksonville, Syracuse, and Bridgeport, Connecticut — and plans to add another 47 markets by year’s end. Sprint started the LTE race late, but is “sprinting” to catch up: the carrier says that by the end of the year, it plans to launch LTE in 100 cities, starting with Chicago, Boston, New York, and Los Angeles.
Sprint’s 4G service is only live in 19 markets today, so a timely expansion of its LTE network is critical to stealing customers away from AT&T, Verizon, and even a few smaller carriers who, along with Sprint, will offer Apple’s new iPhone 5 with LTE capability.
