After months of rumors, Samsung has confirmed the Galaxy S4 mini, a 4.3-inch, 107-gram (3.77-ounce) Android Jelly Bean device that includes many — but not all — of the features of its larger sibling. Although the mini’s display and camera fall short compared to the larger S4, the mini does have several TouchWiz features found in the Galaxy S4, including Panorama Shot, Sound&Shot, Story Album, S Health, and S Translator.
The Galaxy S4 mini runs Android 4.2.2 on a 4.3-inch qHD “Super” AMOLED display — which sadly is relatively low resolution by today’s standards: we’re talking about 256 ppi. Samsung says it is powered by a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor (possibly the Snapdragon 400, as rumored), a 1,900mAh battery, and 1.5 GB of memory. You also get 8 GB of internal expandable storage, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera (as opposed to 13 megapixels on its big brother), and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera.
Samsung will offer the S4 mini in white and black colors, and will show off the device at its upcoming Galaxy & ATIV event in London on June 20th, when we expect pricing and launch dates will be revealed. Based on previous Samsung launches, we’d guess the S4 mini to be available in early summer, probably July, for about $100 on contract, or $100 cheaper off contract than the larger S4.
UK wireless carrier Three has posted a sneak peek video of the S4 here, and Cnet has a concise comparison chart of the Galaxy S4 mini versus the larger Galaxy S4.
