At Mobile World Congress this week, Nokia announced updates to all of its navigation and location apps, which have all been re-branded as “HERE” — without any mention of Nokia. The updated, re-branded apps now give you the cloud sync.
Just like the HERE Drive app, HERE Maps (Windows Store links) was developed by NAVTEQ in Nokia’s Location and Commerce division. Nokia bought NAVTEQ in 2007 for US $8.1 billion, and has since licensed the mapping technology to Amazon, Mozilla, Ford, and others.
The HERE series of apps support users in about 50 languages, but Maps and Transit currently only available to users in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. HERE Maps covers 90 countries and delivers maps on or offline, providing turn-by-turn driving directions using HERE Drive.
HERE Transit gives you directions for public transportation options, including bus, city metro or tram, train, or ferry. You can download HERE Transit here.
HERE City Lens is not yet available on non-Lumia devices, but we expect it would follow. Nokia also plans to make the HERE series available to Android and iOS devices, as it said it would at launch.
